Frederic Bazille (1841-1870)
Have you heard of Georges Bazille? He was part of a group of rebellious artists that included colleagues Claude Monet (1840-1926) and Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919), who would someday be renowned as the Impressionists. But Bazille died prematurely, killed in the Franco-Prussian war in 1870, never able to achieve the future success of his friends.
However, Bazille immortalized himself for posterity in the self portrait above in which he seems to confront us, holding the tools of his profession. While below, in a portrait only recently acquired by the Cleveland Museum of Art, Bazille reveals a rarely seen Renoir, who with his handsome features—particularly his warm, almost alluring eyes–seems eternally young.
Yet, each one would experience different fates: Bazille, an early death, at the beginning of a promising career—Renoir, longevity and enduring fame.
