Edward Penfield above, a leading American illustrator in the late 19th century, is included in a list of his contemporaries like Gustav Klimt, Henri Matisse, Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky, and Suzanne Valadon, all feline worshippers. Yet, in the Self Portrait above, does Penfield realize that his furry friend may be preparing to participate in the creative process? In n a sudden move that could cause an unanticipated delay of Penfield’s completion of the calendar for 1897? Or then again, a poster and ink wells can always be replaced, while any mischief (at least from a human’s viewpoint) ultimately forgiven.
