Have you heard of Louis Anquetin? He was a friend and colleague of Toulouse-Lautrec, Van Gogh and other artists of the avant-garde in Paris during the last decades of the nineteenth century. A period often called Le Belle Epoque or Golden Age when performing arts centers, like the Elysee Montmartre, attracted fashionable customers like the woman above portrayed by Anquetin. Attired in a mixture of sharp colors and striking patterns, from the bustle skirt and form fitting jacket to the unforgettable hat covered with a bounty of artificial flowers. Appearing unaware of the viewer, focused instead on a presence just ahead, most likely a man?
