For almost a dozen summers American Impressionist William Merritt Chase taught art at Shinnecock, out on the tip of Long island. He also continued creating his own works, often using the surrounding landscape as a setting, posing members of his large family engaged in a variety of leisure activities. However, in the painting above, Chase had decided to remain at Shinnecock into the fall, where at least two of his daughters, (one in the foreground and the other in the back wearing a red hat) are likely joining an adult (perhaps their mother or aunt to our left) searching for autumn flowers. Will they find enough for several bouquets?
