Jean-Louis Gerome, Bashi-Bazouk, 1868-69, oil on canvas, Gift of Mrs. Charles Wrightsman, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, New York

Title: Bashi-Bazouk, 1868-69

Artist: Jean-Leon Gerome, (1824-1904)

For the summer, I am going to be featuring paintings during the week for our viewers to contemplate and enjoy like the almost photographic style of  Bashi-Bazouk by then popular 19th century French academic artist Jean-Leon Gerome, who was renowned for his portrayals of the Middle East. Periodically, I will also be contributing a blog on various subjects/topics in art and artists such as Van Gogh or Monet or even lesser known painters (but interesting!).
