The sun, the sand, and the ocean. What a wonderful day to be alive! These swimmers have just emerged from a dip and are huddled together, trying to dry off. The woman in the center bends over, her hair shimmering gold. She wrings her dress dry, squeezing a stream of sparkling water on the wide beach. Nearby her dog backs away. Will he get wet, too?
Eagle Head, Manchester, Massachusetts (High Tide) is one of Homer’s early oils created when he was in his thirties. Already Homer’s figures seem so vivid and real, actually breathing the fresh salt air and soaking up the brilliant summer light.
