On May 8, 1889, Dutch master Vincent van Gogh voluntarily committed himself to the mental asylum of Saint-Remy. Shortly after his arrival, Van Gogh discovered the sanctuary of the garden, where he created the iconic Irises, erupting with the power and energy of spring. A symbol of the rebirth of the artist, who had recently endured the stigma of mental illness while living in nearby Arles.
