Artist: Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901)
Women played a significant role in Lautrec’s artistic career, many of them the dancers and singers of Montmartre (see: our blog of November 24, 2024), whose identities are often well known. However, The Passenger in Cabin 54 portrayed above remains a mystery, more than a century after Lautrec first spotted her during a cruise he was taking from Le Havre to Bordeaux in 1895. But whatever her name, the artist was apparently quite moved by her delicate beauty and calm manner.
Lautrec would live for only six more years, dying prematurely, at the age of 36, leaving an unforgettable legacy including some 350 posters.
