French artist James Tissot (1836-1902) was likely deeply in love with Kathleen Newton, the model of Summer, when he created this riveting work in 1876, although their relationship ended prematurely. While the verses of Pulitzer Prize winning American poet Edna St. Vincent Millay (1892-1950) express both the ecstasy as well as the pain of l’amour.
