Do you notice how young the Madonna and the baby Jesus are in this finely carved terra-cotta sculpture by Quattrocento Florentine artist Antonio Rossellini (1472-1479)? Mary is probably still a teenager, yet she holds Him with tenderness and affection, especially in the way she supports his fleshy thigh and cradles one of his tiny feet. But what is the Christ child holding in His hand? Is it perhaps a toy? Look closely too at the cherub-like head and wings found on Mary’s bodice.
