HAPPY BIRTHDAY MARY CASSATT! (May 22, 1844)
Mary Cassatt spent many hours in the Louvre, touring her favorite galleries. Born and raised in the United States, Cassatt spent most of her artistic career in Paris. Her friend and fellow Impressionist Edgar Degas created a number of works showing Cassatt in the art museum, likely including the painting above (although the identity of the American artist has not been definitely verified). Cassatt also encouraged and guided countrymen Louisine and Harry Havemeyer in accumulating an impressive collection of major works of art, that was ultimately donated to the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
