American artist John Frederick Peto was a master of still life in the United States of the 19th century. Yet, what about the way the artist has arranged the objects? Although the strawberries are piled neatly on a plate, one stray berry seems to have escaped, while the lemons and cake appear to be balanced against each rather precariously.
