It is a summer day in July, 1890, the last month of Vincent van Gogh’s life. Does this field seem more like the ocean, extending towards a limitless horizon? Waves of green and yellow moving under the darkening sky, waiting for the rain to fall. For already thunderheads are rolling in succession across the ground, while above a solitary cloud appears to be departing, followed by a wispy trail of brushstrokes. Overtaken by deep patches of blue, that will likely spread, engulfing any lingering walker, in a deluge.
After spending a year (from May, 1889 to May, 1890) in the asylum of Saint-Remy in the south of France, Vincent traveled north to Auvers-sur-Oise some 16 miles from Paris. There Vincent would be treated by physician and art lover Dr. Gachet, who encouraged him to continue working, the artist producing some 74 paintings and 33 drawings in approximately two months.
