THREE SCENES FROM THE CHRISTMAS STORY
Little is known about the background of Juan de Flandes (active 1496-1519), painter of the three panels below illustrating the different events of the Christmas narrative. He is considered an Hispano-Flemish artist, likely originally from the area now known as modern day Belgium, although ultimately traveling to Spain where he created these works for an altarpiece in the Church of San Lazaro in Palencia. Presently part of the National Gallery of Art’s collection in Washington, D.C., they are painted with the striking realistic technique and color of Flemish art.
