Another new year greeting through an artist’s eyes!  In my search for a painting to complement Alfred Lord Tennyson’s poetry below, I was delighted to find Soap Bubbles by Danish artist H.A. Brendekilde who until yesterday was unknown to me.

Hope

Smiles from the threashold of the year to come,

Whispering “it will be happier.”

Alfred Lord Tennyson

H.A. Brendekilde (1857-1942) was born Hans Andersen in the countryside of Denmark. Although he came from a poor background, Brendekilde studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Arts and became an accomplished realist painter.  Alfred Lord Tennyson (1809-1892) attained the honor of Poet Laureate in Victorian England, penning epic poems like The Charge of the Light Brigade. The above excerpt is from The Foresters, a work about Robin Hood and Maid Marian.
