Arts Everyday Living: Two Views of the Folk Life of Brittany Including Van Gogh’s Friend Bernard

Emile Bernard, Breton Women Attending a Pardon, 1892, oil on cardboard, Dallas Museum of Art, Dallas, Texas

French artists Emile Bernard (1868-1941) and Pascal Dagnan Bouveret (1852-1929) might have been contemporaries, but their creative interpretations of the peasants of the coastal region of Brittany certainly were based on different visions.  Emile Bernard was also a friend and colleague of Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890).
