Arts Everyday Living: Through the Eyes of Modigliani—Portrait of a Fellow Artist

Amedeo Modigliani, Leon Bakst, 1917, oil on canvas, National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.

Russian artist Leon Bakst (1866-1924) was especially known for his innovative costume and set design.  In 1917, his colleague Amedeo Modigliani (1884-1920) captured a 51 year old Bakst on canvas.

(You might want to click on Bakst’s own self-portrait done almost a quarter century earlier for comparison.)
