Arts Everyday Living: Through the Eyes of Impressionist Pissarro–The Wisdom of a Gardener

Camille Pissarro, The Gardener–Old Peasant with Cabbage, 1883-1895, oil on canvas, National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.

Of all the Impressionists, Camille Pissarro (1830-1903) focused on the peasants of the French countryside, where he lived most of his career. In the work above, Pissarro creates a moving portrait of an elder gardener, almost tenderly holding the cabbage he has  grown.
