Arts Everyday Living: Through the Eyes of Cassatt & Manet–Art of Leisure, Parks & Gardens

Mary Cassatt, Children in the Garden (The Nurse), 1878, oil on canvas, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Texas

American Impressionist Mary Cassatt (1844-1926) and French artist Edouard Manet (1832-1883) were contemporaries, both immortalizing in paint the leisurely activities of their time including visits to the garden and park, a popular pastime.  Cassatt’s work above reflects her focus on children, the centerpiece of her career, while Manet introduces the viewer to his favorite bench below where he spent many hours during the summer of 1881, in a rented home just outside the Paris.
