John Singer Sargent, Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose, 1885-1886, oil on canvas, Tate Britain, London, UK

American artist John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) is remembered as one of the late 19th century’s most accomplished portraitists.  However, Sargent, like his French Impressionist friend Claude Monet (1840-1926) was also fascinated by the changing effects of color and light in natural surroundings, including the evening setting of Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose above.
