Edwin Henry Landseer, Portrait of Rachel Russell, 1835, oil on canvas, Private Collection

I declare after all there is no enjoyment like reading! How much sooner one tires of anything than a book!….

Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice

British painter Edwin Henry Landseer (1802-1873) is usually identified as a master artist of animals, including the pets of Queen Victoria.  However, as demonstrated above, he could also create a moving portrait of a young girl as well.  Jane Austen (1775-1817) continues to be popular with readers, from her native Great Britain to countries throughout the world.
