Arts Everyday Living: The Art of the Chair—From a Summer Landscape to Indoor Reading

Erik Werenskiold, In Family Surroundings, c. 1900, oil on canvas, Private Collection

Chairs play an important role in both of these works of art—from the rather humble furniture of In Family Surroundings by Norwegian painter Erik Werenskiold (1855-1938) to the unique scissor chair (its design dating from the second millennium B.C.) depicted in the mixed media work by German artist Max Handrick (1879-1925).
