Arts Everyday Living: The Art of Music—A Violinist, A Cellist, and the Artistry of the Strings

Otto Scholderer, The Violinist at the Window, 1861, oil, Stadel Museum, Frankfurt, Germany

Musicians have  fascinated painters, who often played instruments themselves.  Notice, though, the different interpretations of German Otto Scholderer (1834-1902) and American Thomas Eakins (1844-1916), whether the rather dreamy violinist above or the cellist below absorbed in his playing.
