Pierre Bonnard, The Letter, 1906, oil on canvas, National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.

French artist Pierre Bonnard (1867-1947), a contemporary of colleague Henri Matisse (1869-1954), primarily depicted domestic scenes. His figures often engaged in everyday activities such as writing correspondence, perhaps reminding us of a Vermeer.
