Giuseppe Recco, A Still Life of Roses, Carnations, Tulips and Other Flowers with Pastries & Sweetmeats, 17th century, o.c., Private Collection

During the Baroque period in art, artists like still life specialist Italian Giuseppe Recco (1634-1695) created rich, detailed combinations of  colorful flowers and tempting desserts. More than two centuries later, American master John Frederick Peo (1854-1907) presents a simpler yet appealing offering of cake, lemons and strawberries.
