EARTH POEM
A CHILD’S HOMAGE TO SPRING

Theodoor Verstraete, Spring in Schoore, detail, 1894, oil on canvas, Musee des Beaux-Artes, Tournai, Belgium

Rainer Maria Rilke, Sonnets to Orpheus
Belgian artist Theodoor Verstraete (1850-1907) focused on scenes of the countryside, particularly of peasant life. Although I have used the above excerpt from the poetry of Austro-Bohemian Rainer Maria Rilke (1875-1926) before, it seems perfect for Verstraete’s painting.
