Like the couple above, soon to be parted by war, poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806-1861) and Pre-Raphaelite painter John Everett Millais (1829-1896) suffered romantic obstacles. Barrett, for instance, had to secretly wed fellow poet Robert Browning because of her father’s opposition to their love. While Millais’ wife left her first husband critic John Ruskin for the artist, scandalizing British society.
