There is one spectacle grander than the sea, that is the sky; there is one spectacle grander than the sky, that is the interior of the soul.

Victor Hugo, Les Miserables

The birthdays of two giants of French arts are coming next week: Impressionist icon Pierre-Auguste Renoir (born February 25, 1841) and famed author Victor Hugo (born February 26, 1802).  Plus a host of other creative souls, from photographer Ansel Adams (b. February 20, 1902) to poet Edna St. Vincent Millay (b. February 22, 1892) to painter Winslow Homer (b. February 24, 1836), all Americans.
