I rediscovered this blog of two years ago and couldn’t resist reviving the miraculous sunset by Russian artist Nikolai Yaroshenko (1846-1898) with an accompanying poem by Emily Dickinson. Be sure to click to maximize your view.
The Sea of Sunset
This is the land the sunset washes,
These are the banks of the Yellow Sea;
Where it rose, or wither it rushes,
These are the western mystery!
Night after night her purple traffic
Strews the landing with opal bales;
Merchantmen poise upon the horizons,
Dip, and vanish with fairy sails.
Emily Dickisnson (1830-1886)
