Nicolas de Largillierre, Elizabeth Throckmorton, Canoness of the Order of the Dames Augustines Anglaises, 1729, oil on canvas, National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.

A beautiful woman delights the eye; a wise woman, the understanding; a pure one, the soul.

Minna Antrim

Canoness Elizabeth Throckmorton above seems to combine all of the attributes of Minna Antrim’s quote.  The daughter of Sir Robert Throckmorton Bart (who commissioned the work), she served in the Catholic Church in France.  Ncolas de Largillierre (1656-1746), its artist, was court painter to Louis XIV and esteemed for his portraiture.  American author Antrim (1861-1950) is best known for her sayings and maxims as well as her children’s books.
