Danish artist Vilhelm Hammershoi (1864-1916) has often been compared to Vermeer, particularly his works like Interior with Young Woman Seen from Behind, in which he transforms an ordinary room into a place of quiet mystery.

Belgian master of Surrealism Rene Magritte (1898-1967) is internationally renowned for such masterpieces as The False Mirror and Golconda, combining an ingenious combination of reality with fantasy.
