THE GENIUS OF SPANISH ART
A VISION OF SMILES & LAUGHTER

Bartolome Esteban Murillo, Two Women at a Window, 1655-1660, oil on canvas, National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.
They say that you have thirteen springs,
and you are a vision of beauty
and that in your great eyes reverberate,
the glow of the immortal stars.

Few paintings connect as directly with the viewer as Two Women at a Window by Spanish Baroque painter Bartolome Essteban Murillo (1617-1682). For the artist introduces us to an intergenerational pair from Seville, obviously delighted to make our acquaintance, The teenage girl, circa 1655, open and uninhibited, occupying the foreground space, while her older duenna or chaperone feigns embarrassment, cloaking her laughter in a display of modesty.
*Jose de Espronceda (1808-1842) was both a popular poet and political activist during the Romantic era of Spanish literature.
