Arts Everyday Living: A Week at the Gallery—Art of the Madonna, Easter Prelude

 THE ART OF THE MADONNA

A WEEK AT THE ART GALLERY

 NEW 2015 EXHIBITIONS

Picturing Mary: Woman, Mother, Idea, with its more than 60 interpretations of the Madonna from a host of international museums, is a moving prelude to the arrival of Easter on Sunday. Just click on the online display which complements the current exhibition at the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C., spotlighting  a range of artists from Renaissance giant Botticelli to leading Baroque women painters such as Elisabetta Sirani and Artemisia Gentileschi.

Or the tender rendering of maternal bonding in Madonna and Child below, by Botticelli’s colleague Fra Filippo Lippi (c. 1406-1469)—expressed in the affectionate gestures of Mary and the sweet smile of the baby Jesus. Now in the Palazzo Medici Riccardi in Florence, Lippi’s masterpice was recovered from a psychiatric hospital in the early 20th century.
