Arts Everyday Living: Late Masterpiece by Van Gogh–the Mysterious Couple Among the Poplars

Vincent van Gogh, Undergrowth with Two Figures, 1890, oil, Cincinnati Art Museum, Cincinnati, Ohio

Dutch icon Vincent van Gogh (1853-2890) created Undergrowth with Two Figures during the last month of his life when he was living at Auvers-sur-Oise, near Paris. Note the strong vertical thrust of the painting, evident in what Vincent described to his brother Theo as “trunks of violet poplars” that almost camouflage the tall slender forms of the couple.
