Arts Everyday Living: Inside the Realm of Books—From Solitary Reader to Alice in Wonderland

Franz Dvorak, Thoughtful Reader, 1906, oil on canvas, Location Unknown

Both Czech Franz Dvorak (1862-1927) and Brit George Dunlop Leslie (1835-1921) portrayed popular pastimes such as reading.   Each work of art demonstrates the individual interpretation by each artist, from the young woman concentrating diligently on her book to the interaction between the mother and child (who was Leslie’s daughter) sharing the classic story of Alice in Wonderland.
