Arts Everyday Living: In the Woods of Monhegan—Alone On a Northern Island

George Bellows, The Grove, Monhegan, 1913, oil on cardboard, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Texas

American artist George Bellows (1882-1925) is best known for his realistic portrayals of New York City at the beginning of the twentieth century art, ranging from tenement scenes to sporting events like boxing.  In contrast, Bellows also  was drawn to the sea  and the island of Monhegan, just off the coast of Maine, depicting the beauty of  the natural environment.
