Arts Everyday Living: An Arts Interlude—On the Road with J. R. R. Tolkien

Reposted from 2013.

The Road goes ever on and on

Out from the door where it began.

Now far ahead the Road has gone,

Let others follow it who can!

Let them a journey new begin.

But I at last with weary feet

Will turn towards the lighted inn,

My evening-rest and sleep to meet.

J.R.R. Tolkien

Swiss artist Ferdinand Hodler created Autumn Evening the year Lord of the Rings author J. R. R. Tolkien was born.

Ferdinand Hodler (1853-1918), Autumn Evening, 1892-1893, oil on canvas, Musee d’Art et d’Histoire, Neuchatel, Switzerland.

J. R. R. Tolkien (1892-1973), Excerpt from Lord of the Rings, first published in 1954.

And I just discovered today (September, 2019) another fall scene by Hodler, demonstrating his love of trees and the natural world.
