Arts Everyday Living: Happy Halloween: Edgar Allan Poe and The Black Cat

Aubrey Beardsley, The Black Cat, 1894-1895, black ink drawing.

British artist Aubrey Beardsley (1872-1898) was only 25 when he died, but he managed to create a wealth of works of art.  His reputation as illustrator was based on his striking black and white drawings, known particularly for their elegant and fluid line. Among Beardsley’s famous authors was American literary master Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849), whose tales of suspense and terror (such as The Black Cat) offer the perfect way to celebrate Halloween.
