THROUGH AN IMPRESSIONIST’S EYES
PARADISE IN THE BACKYARD

John Henry Twachtman, John Alden Twachtman, Greenwich Gardens, begun late 1890s, oil on canvas, Private Collection
In my mind I have finer pictures than ever before. Ten thousand pictures come and go every day and those are the only complete pictures painted, pictures that shall never be polluted by paint and canvas.

Like Claude Monet, American Impressionist John Henry Twachtman (1853-1902) created a garden paradise in the backyard of his home near Greenwich, Connecticut. A considerable percentage of Twachtman’s body of works were done there including the painting above. However, it would be John Alden, the artist’s son and painter himself, who would actually complete it after his father’s premature death at 49.
