A BEQUEST TO A CHILD

THE WINGS OF IMAGINATION

Charles-Amable Lenoir, Portrait of Andree Lenoir, 1902, pastel on paper mounted on canvas, location unknown

There are only two lasting bequests we can hope to give our children. One of these is roots, the other wings.*

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Although he seemed to have had a successful career, French artist Charles-Amable Lenoir (1860-1926) is another painter whose name and work have generally faded with time.  Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832), one of Germany’s leading literary figures, wrote about a number of subjects including botany and anatomy.
