Edouard Vuillard, Portrait of Theodore Duret, 1912, oil on cardboard on wood, National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.

Edouard Vuillard (1868-1940) belongs to the second generation of French artists who revolutionized the world of painting, following the footsteps of older masters Courbet, Manet, Monet, Degas, among others. Critic Theodore Duret, portrayed above by Vuillard, was one of the influential advocates of the new art movements that continued well into the 20th century.
