Arts Everyday Living: Edvard Munch’s Norwegian Rival Nikolai Astrup–A Vision of Mountains

Nikolai Astrup, Marsh Marigold Night, n.d., oil on canvas, Kode Art Museums and Composer Homes, Bergen, Noway

Norwegian artist Nikolai Astrup (1880-1928) spent most of his painting career surrounded by the scenic environment of Western Norway, full of dramatic mountains and rolling fields of flowering blossoms.  Clark Institute in Williamstown, Massachusetts is currently holding the first exhibition of Astrup’s works in North America, an historic event.
