French innovator Gustave Courbet (1819-1877) is best known for challenging the artistic norms of his day in the ground-breaking movement of Realism (ultimately resulting in other art rebellions, from Impressionism to the modern period).  However, Vase of Lilacs, Roses, and Tulips, along with other works of the flower genre, represents one of his more conventional themes.
