A FRENCH IMPRESSIONIST SUMMER

BLOSSOMS OF JULY

Gustave Caillebotte, Vase of Gladioli, 1887, oil on canvas, Private Collection

I paint flowers so they will not die.

Frida Kahlo, 1940

The colorful and striking works of French Impressionist Gustave Caillebotte (1848-1894) have been overlooked until recent years when several retrospective exhibitions have been held from Washington, D.C. to Tokyo, Japan.  Although the creativity of Mexican master Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) was known in artistic circles during her lifetime, she did not achieve superstar status until the last decade of so of the twentieth century.
