THE SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS ALL YEAR LONG

THROUGH A CHILD’S EYES

Christmas, children, is not a date.  It is a state of mind.

I’ve featured the works of Swedish painter and illustrator Carl Larsson (1853-1919) in various blogs over the years including several of his 8 children.  So I assumed initially that Matts Bergom Larsson above was one of the artist’s offspring, but his son with the same name died at the age of two months. So who is this beguiling boy? Actually he was the oldest child of the vice mayor of Stockholm, Yngve Larsson; as an adult Matts became a renowned labor and union leader in his country.

Even though American author and educator Mary Ellen Chase (1887-1973) devoted almost three decades to teaching at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts, she still had time to write some 30 books, both for children and adults.  A native of Maine, her novels on its people and environment such as Mary Peters and Silas Crockett became best sellers in the 1930s.
