……The calm repose of autumn days,

Steals quietly o’er the troubled breast,

Soothing life’s weary cares to rest.*

A Song of October

Swiss artist Arnold Bocklin (1827-1901) is best known for his often haunting works like Autumn Thoughts above, poetic in quality, yet also touched with a sense of melancholy.  Unfortunately little information is available on this painting as well as Phebe A. Holder, the author of A Song of October,” published in the Queries Magazine in 1890.
