It is 10:00 p.m. and twilight when the atmosphere is tinted blue, almost the same color as the incoming tide. Yet, the two friends converse together as if it were still the middle of the afternoon.* Can we guess what confidence or secret they are sharing?
Summer Evening on the Skagen’s Southern Beach is Norwegian artist Peder Severin Kroyer’s masterpiece, although he continued painting other interpretations of the theme of women along the shore until his death.
*The models are Kroyer’s wife Marie and Danish painter Anne Ancher who was also from the fishing village of Skagen, an important artists’ colony established around 1880.
Information on Peder Severin Kroyer (1851-1909) is from Northern Light by Kirk Vernadoe, Yale University Press, New Haven, Connecticut, 1988.
