Arts Everyday Living: Art of Still Life–A Memory of Old Spain, Melon, Pears, and a Loaf of Bread?

Luis Melendez, Still Life with Melons and Pears, about 1772, oil, Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Massachusetts

This still life by Spanish master Luis Melendez (1716-1780) contrasts to W.B. Gould’s work in a number of ways.  For instance, how about the palette of colors? Or the overall composition? And the solidity of the forms, especially the melon? Do you feel as if you can almost touch the pieces of fruit plus the basket, bowls and other objects? But are the pears appetizing?
