Arts Everyday Living: Art of Escaping the Summer Heat—Northern Woods to Winter Memories

George Bellows, Evening Blue, c. 1913-1916, oil on panel, Private Collection

American artist George Bellows (1882-1925) created many of his works of art in the early years of the 20th century, often utilizing tactile, expressive brushstrokes and bold, unforgettable colors.  Although Bellows lived and worked primarily in New York City (where he painted Love of Winter in Central Park below), he also traveled to popular artistic locales such as Monhegan Island off the coast of Maine.
