Arts Everyday Living: A Child of the Dutch Golden Age—Angel in a Blue Dress

Portrait of a Girl Dressed in Blue, Johannes Cornelisz Verspronck, 1641, oil on canvas, Rijksmuseum,   Amsterdam, Netherlands

Love children especially, for they too are sinless like angels; they live to soften and purify and, our hearts as it were, to guide us.

Fyodor Dostoyevsky, The Brothers Karamazov

Johannes Cornelisz Verspronck (c. 1603-1662) created the moving portrait above during what is often considered by art historians the Golden Age of Dutch Art; among his contemporaries were Rembrandt, Vermeer, and Hals.  Russian writer Fyodor Dostoyevsky (1821-1881) is one of the major novelists of his century, capturing the social, political and spiritual turmoil of the time with works such as Crime and Punishment, The Idiot, and The Brothers Karamazov.
